In ancient times the Vicenza plain was wrecked by disastrous floods, and this area was a safe haven for the populous, hence the name “ Vicenza Island”. The importance can also be noted by the parish church of San Pietro, built along side one of the Vicenza’s area’s oldest churches. Also up on the cliffs above the river is the sanctuary of Santa Maria del Cengio, a monastery complex.
