The Trentino Alto Adige region is all about mountains and wide valleys. The Region has always separated from "real Italia" and closely related to the Austrian Empire. The Trentino Alto Adige region is a land area Italy acquired after World War 1. Trentino Alto Adige Region consist of two independent provinces, the Trentino (Trento Province) in the southern portion of the region and the Bolzano Province in the north. Most of the Trento Province has been traditionally Italian speaking, and the Alto Adige or Sud Tryol (Bolzano Province) has a richer Austrian connection. The entire region is covered by the mountain ranges of the Central and Eastern Alps, Prealps and the Italian Dolomites. The region is bordered by Austria, the Veneto Region, Switzerland, and Lombardy Region. The capital of Trentino Alto Adige Region is the Trento.
The Trentino Alto Adige was acquired by the Italian State as part of the accords of WWI. A rich region that has had a tourism tradition since the early 1800's. This can be noted by the facilities and care the region has put into the tourism industry. Trentino Alto Adige is mostly a region known for its outdoor recreation like skiing in the winter, and hiking in the summer. As well the region is well known for Lake Garda and the water sports near Riva del Garda and Torbole.In the southern part of the region in the Trento Province you have the lower part of the Adige valley with the towns of Rovereto and Trento. For those who are fascinated with the medieval lifestyle and castles you can find several throughout the province. Castello di Avio is located along the Adige Bike Path, castles in the Sarca valley above Arco. The area around Madonna di Campiglio you find one of the best equipped ski resorts in the Dolomites. In the eastern part of the province you have the towns of Cavalese, San Martino di Castozza, Moena, and other ski town or great bases for exploring the Italian Dolomites. In the Bolzano Province you have the main town of Bolzano and heading up the valley to the west you find Merano at the base of several major peaks of the Alps. The Venosta valley is reached from Merano where you find apple orchards, castles, and approaches to Passo del Stelvio and Lake Resina. North of Bolzano you arrive in Bressanone where you can head east toward Brunico and Austria. This valley also takes you up to the Alto Badia valley which is the heart of the Ladin culture and town of Covara. You also access the Sella Mountains and the Dolomite road. North of Bressonone you would cross the border over to Innsbruck Austria. There are plenty of small valleys and villages along the main autostrada with Vipiteno being one of the primary stops.
