Rovigo
The Rovigo Province is very overlooked by individuals traveling through the regions but it is full of history and great foods.· The Po Delta, the villas, the rural villages and the townships of ancient origin, the beaches and the river branches, islets, reeds and the fishing ponds. These and many more are the fascinating elements which make of Rovigo and its province one of the most characteristic yet less known destinations of Veneto.
Rovigo, the capital city of Polesine, is located between the Po and the Adige, in a plain designed by the geometric lines of the land reclamation canals. Although modern in aspect, the ancient Rhodigium was funded as a bishop's feud and its urban fabric bears witness to its ancient early medieval history, whilst the secular and religious palaces reflect the characteristics of the Serenissima Republic, which dominated here between the 15th and 18th century. Strolling along the town center we can breath in the surreal atmosphere of the Po Delta, a dreamlike and extraordinary landscape which continues to offer fresh and original perspectives. It is a world born from the infinite battle between sea, river and land, where nature remains in her wild state and where a magical silence dominates. The Po Delta is an immense stretch covering over 700 square kilometers, the largest European and Mediterranean wetland, protected as a Regional Park.
A visit to Polesine should certainly include a stop in Adria, a town of ancient origins which gave its name to the Adriatic sea. The National Archaeological Museum displays ancient objects found in the surrounding territory, including Iron Age tools and pottery, black and red Attic vases, jewelry and implements. But the territory of Rovigo also presents many more surprises: for example Fratta Polesine preserves Villa Badoer, one of the masterworks of Andrea Palladio; the township of Lorèo was a historic outpost of the Serenissima, which here left its mark, still visible in the architecture and colors of the houses; Porto Viro boasts one of the most striking sceneries due to the marshes, abundant with fauna, the fossil dunes which in the past marked the border between sea and land, the lagoons and the scanni (recently formed islets).
Finally the beaches. Rosolina Mare is the principal tourist center of the northern part of the Delta, with a coastline, equipped for bathing, stretching along about 8 km; the Island of Albarella is an exclusive seaside destination, with its beach extending along two and a half kilometers, deserted for long stretches. Behind the island six hundred hectares of forests are covered by Mediterranean marquis.
