Friuli Venezia Giulia, located in the far northeastern corner of Italy is quite unique. Through the ages Romans, Lombards, and Byzantines left their mark and for over 500 years the area was part of the Austria-Hungarian Empire. Friuli Venezia Giulia also is part of the Treveneto, (along with Veneto and Trentino) and has four provinces Udine, Pordenone, Gorizia, and Trieste. The capital of the Friuli Venezia Region is Udine. The Friuli region has had the unfortunate luck of being at the crossroads of east and west sharing it's border with Austria and Slovenia. The result has created a rich multi-ethnic mixture, Italian, but fascinating with Central and Eastern European traits, that offers much to be explored.
