Top 10 Cities to visit in Northeastern Italy

I am asked many times what is there to visit in the area or what town is a do not miss location. It is not easy to pick the top 5 or top 10 cities to visit in the North of Italy. Each region has its on particular flavor and particular history to explore but that is what makes the area special.·There are a few places that stand out above all others. These are not in any specific order after Venice

1. Venezia or "Venice has to be the top city to visit on any one's list. But if you have not reviewed the history of the Republic, it is difficult to appreciate the uniqueness of Venice.

2. Bologna - A great city, to often overlooked, full of history and culture.

3. Verona- It has Roman, Venetian, and Austria-Hungarian ruins and influence, literary significance thanks to Shakespeare, and as a cross roads between north and south the old part of the city has maintained its charm.

4. Vicenza- Palladio villas and elegance is the best way to describe Vicenza, it is a nice surprise.

5. Bolzano- Mixed with the style of Italy and the efficiency of German-Austrian population Bolzano is abuzz with activity and things to do.

6. Ferrara - A Renaissance city that still holds it old style.

7. Udine - Not well know but the city has a lot of history.

8. Cortina - I would never visit in the winter, it is much over rated and priced, but a summer time visit is very enjoyable.

9. San Marino - Yes, I know it is a separate and independent state but it sits in the Emilia Romagna and should be visited.

10. Trieste - James Joyce, Illy Cafe, Austrian port city, cross road of eastern and Western European cultures. 

Each area is offer great active vacation choices, get out off the beaten path.
