Pale di San Martino Mountain Group

Hiker's Guide to Italy - Dolomiti Mountains

Pale di San Martino (pillars of San Martino) mountain group sits in the Trentino province of Italy. It is then a wonderfully isolated mountain range or many years however now there is a road nearing completion that has tunneled through the most of the natural barriers and open valleys below the imposing towers of San Martino. San Martino di Castrozza is where the cable cars and ski lifts are located and the best departure point into the mountains. A ski resort town San Martino has become very trendy during the winter time and during the summer the place to enjoy a week walking. There are plenty of quaint hotels that are open during the summer time and many of the ski lifts have been opened to transport mountain bikes as well as hikers.

The mountain group is defined by the boundary made of the Agordo valley to the east, Fassa valley to the west. the Cismon river, Passo di Cereda, and passo S. Pellrgrino to the north. The mountain group is distinguished by many rock towers found in throughout the mountain group.

To get to the Pale di San Martino Mountain group you can come either from the South from Feltre. Coming from the south you will arrive first at Fiera di Priemero, which sits in a wide valley and is the largest town of the mountain group. Fiera di Priemero has a nice selection of hotels and is not a bad option for exploring the area because there are various bus services in private transport in the town. If you are coming from the north, you would have to make your way to Passo Rolle and then descend down into San Martino.

The mountain group has the spectacular landscape that the dolomites are known for and there are multiple activities to do if you decide to include this area in your vacation plans

Hiking San Martino - You are are planning on doing day hikes the best option is to stay in San Martino di Castozza, you are near the lifts.  There is a great 3 day or 4 day trek across the mountain group that I would recommend you do.  There are several easy vie ferrata to enjoy.

Mountain Bike San Martino - This is one of the first areas of the Dolomiti to let bikers utilize the lifts to get to the upper trails.  There is a downhill park and several designated routes you can ride.  There also hiking over routes so stop by the APT for specific information.

Road Bike routes: A great three days could be spend in Fiera di Primero and riding the following passes;  Passo Rolle - Passo Cereda - Passo Brocon.

Rock Climbing:  There are several great bolted walls in the mountain group.
